On December 3, 2025, Nowak, a first-year student at the University of Southampton, was walking home alone after a night out when he was attacked without warning by 23-year-old Vickrum Digwa. Digwa used an 8-inch Sikh ceremonial blade (a kirpan) to stab Nowak multiple times, inflicting fatal wounds. Digwa then made a 999 call falsely claiming that Nowak had racially assaulted him and knocked off his turban.
