Afrobeats did not just spring up, long before Afrobeats there was highlife, originating in Ghana in the early 20th century. Highlife blended traditional African rhythm with western instruments like guitars, horns and jazz instruments.
In the 1960s-70s Fela Kuti, a musician and political activist from Nigeria built on the foundation and Pioneer Afrobeat. A fusion of Highlife, jazz and funk at first it was beyond a sound. Afrobeats was used to create political consciousness and to create awareness about the political structure in Africa
( Nigeria in particular).
