Though it's still niche in 2026, there's growing buzz about Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO.
GEO involves writing and structuring content so AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Grok, Gemini, or Claude can easily pull it out and use it in their answers, ideally with a direct citation to you as a source. Instead of ranking on Google or Bing, you're instead trying to get quoted or referenced inside AI-generated responses in the various AI platforms.
I went over this in a previous post, but some quick distinctions:
SEO โ helps you show up at the top of search results
AEO โ gets you the featured snippet or voice answer spot in SERPs
GEO โ gets your content cited in longer AI replies in the AI platforms
The big reason why these terms and their processes matter? People are getting full answers from AI, often without clicking through to websites. If your content isnโt easy for AI to grab and trust, you basically disappear from those conversations.
Good GEO means your brand or info gets repeatedly cited across different AI tools, which builds authority faster (and arguably more durably) than traditional rankings brought to you via SEO.
There are a number of main pieces that make GEO work, many of which are shared with traditional SEO:
- Modular, self-contained blocks
- Sections that stand alone
- Clear definitions and explanations
- Descriptive subheadings
- Easy to quote without losing meaning
- Put the answer up front
- Lead with the key point in the first 40โ60 words
- Keep it short, clear, and direct
- Skip long walls of text
- Helpful structure & schema markup
- Use clean, logical headings and lists
- Semantic HTML that makes sense to machines
- Make it machine-friendly
- Valid HTML, no heavy JS blocking core content
- Allow AI crawlers in robots.txt
- Smart internal links
- Match real user questions
- Use question-style headings
- Cover specific queries deeply
If AI canโt quickly understand and break your content into useful byte (ha!) sized pieces, it wonโt use it.
GEO is about becoming part of how the model thinks and explains things in trusted responses. It's more than simple search. It's about becoming part of the answer itself.
In short, here's the GEO flow:
Query in the AI system โ AI discovery โ AI chunk pull โ AI answer build โ AI citation

Optimizing your site for AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) & GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is essential in 2026 as AI grows.
AEO = direct snippets & zero-click wins
GEO = citations in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Grok, etc.
