In cases where the driver defers, it's felt to be charity (by all involved), and the intruding pedestrian is in their debt.
(Even if it's the law that the driver yields at a crosswalk)
These are the expectations we inherit from a roadway system designed for car convenience.
And to be clear, the whole thing demonstrates just how thoroughly car-brain has infected all of us.
The road network instills a might-makes-right mentality where the driver of the big heavy vehicle is owed seamless movement because they *can* go faster...

japan discourages car ownership with cities banning street parking over night. this opens their streets to be curbless, pedestrian oriented, and vibrant. in japan 80% of kids walk to school. in the US that's 10%
