The Women’s Empowerment Coalition of NYC builds power and unity among women from diverse communities through dialogue, education and leadership development
It was a great week at SBS - we:

By refusing to fund SNAP, Republicans are taking food out of the mouths of nearly three million New Yorkers—mostly seniors and children.
They want to force families to choose between affordable heath care and feeding their children. It's shameful, and we won't stand for it.
The Women Empowerment Coalition of NYC proudly joined the #MENACoalition in Albany to advocate for $15M in the 2026 state budget for culturally competent services for the MENA community. It’s time our voices are heard, our data is counted, and our communities are funded.#FundMENA
I was proud to join @cacf at the 18% and Growing Coalition rally in Bensonhurst!
We must ensure that our AAPI community gets a fair share of our budget. A lack of resources has put a strain on the incredible organizations that provide services to D38 like @WECNYC1@HCS_Homecrest
🚨 The voting phase for #ThePeoplesMoney, NYC’s citywide participatory budgeting, is now open! ✅ Cast your vote online using the QR code in the image and be sure to put WEC as your community partner.Or come to our office and vote in person.Let’s make our voices heard! #NYCBudget
We are Deeply grateful to @NYAGJamesParody for your generous support in helping families in need. Access to essential supplies truly makes a meaningful impact!
My office delivered $6,300 worth of baby formula to @WECNYC1 and @MixtecaOrg, nonprofits serving communities in New York City, to give to families in need.
We secured the formula from Paragon, a baby formula supplier, for price gouging during the 2022 shortage.
We are proud to have worked hand in hand with the incredible members of the MENA Coalition to make this milestone a reality. This success highlights the power of collaboration to ensuring that MENA communities are seen, heard, and included in decisions that shape their lives
VICTORY! Gov Hochul signed my bill with @SenGianaris, A6219B which will result in the disaggregation of data of Middle Eastern and North African communities in NY’s state institutions. This is a BIG win for MENA representation!
Thank you to the coalition! https://t.co/D4bGPfZYLI
Celebrating the newest space opening of @WECNYC1 here in Sunset Park this past wknd. Women's Empowerment Center brings much needed resources to women in this community and beyond. Somia and her team are incredible and so grateful to know her all these years!
Congratulations to @WECNYC1 and @Somia_Elrowmeim on opening the new training and education space in Sunset Park!
From your Iftar dinner to small business talks and now this milestone, it's inspiring to see your continued dedication to women's empowerment.
Through education, storytelling, and advocacy, WECNYC continues to build power and create opportunities for women across our city.
The Democratic Party must stop ignoring its various constituencies. MENA communities deserve to be heard and represented.
We can start doing so in NY by signing my bill with @SenGianaris, A6219B/S6584C into law to disaggregate the data of our MENA neighbors. #CountMENAIn
New York's Yemeni community is vibrant, welcoming, and an important part of the fabric of our city.
Grateful for our conversation in Little Yemen in the Bronx where we discussed everything from language access to anti-Muslim bigotry, to the issues small businesses owners face.
"New York passed legislation this year to disaggregate MENA citizens on government forms and create a new MENA racial category. The bill was sponsored by @SenGianaris & @votejgr and is currently waiting to be signed into law by Governor Hochul" - @NYAmNews https://t.co/MYcIdeaS9H
My bill, Int 1076, would require the City to study the representation of MENA businesses in city contracts. If they’re found to be underrepresented, it would make them eligible for the M/WBE program!
Stated Meeting Recap 🧵
I introduced a new bill aimed at including Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) businesses in our City’s M/WBE program. MENA communities are misclassified as “White” in the US Census despite not identifying that way or being perceived as such.
WECNYC is proud to support Bill #1076, which includes Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) business owners in the MWBE program. Huge thanks to CM @ShahanaFromBK for introducing this important legislation! This bill will give MENA entrepreneurs the resources they need to grow.
