Labour has U-turned on a VPN ban.
The Free Speech Union has become increasingly concerned that, following the announcement of a social media ban for under-16s, the Government was considering banning VPNs.
Technology Secretary Liz Kendall said in the House of Commons a few weeks ago that the Government was reviewing the possibility.
This is good news today that there will be no ban. Had the Government pressed ahead with a VPN ban, the UK would have joined the ranks of countries such as Turkmenistan, Iran, Iraq and North Korea.
On BBC Breakfast, Online Safety Minister Kanishka Narayan said:
“So look, we’ve uh we’ve engaged very widely with families across the country on the question of VPNs and one of the big things we heard was that many families feel VPNs are important to protect their privacy and their children. Whistleblowers told us the VPNs are important for them. Minority groups told us that the ability to use VPNs is a really important way in which they can call out for help when they need it. And so for those reasons, we have decided not to limit VPNs today. And that’s the that’s the primary conclusion for now. But it is something we’ll continue to review. We want to make sure that young people are safe on VPNs in particular. And so we’ll work with the companies to make sure that’s the case.”
However, the Government does appear to be keeping its options open for a future ban. The Free Speech Union will be keeping a close eye on developments as the new Government takes shape under Andy Burnham.

That’s why we’ve written to the UK Government today opposing any restrictions. #SafeAndSecure
