ODM Must Reject the Deputy President Trap
ODM must NOT touch that Deputy President position with a ten-foot pole. Not now. Not in 2027. Not ever in this arrangement. Chasing that seat is a strategic suicide that will castrate our party, dilute our bargaining power, and turn us from kingmakers into glorified cheerleaders for someone else's agenda.
Let me break it down for you plainly, because some of our leaders seem to be suffering from political blindness. One, the DP slot is a consolation prize, not power. In Kenya's politics, the Deputy President is the spare tyre. You only matter when the President has a puncture. Otherwise, you're sitting pretty in the passenger seat, clapping and waving while the driver decides everything.
Look at history:
Gachagua was "powerful" until he wasn't – impeached like a common criminal. Kindiki himself is now fighting tooth and nail to keep the seat, telling Mt Kenya, "I'm not going anywhere." If even the occupant knows it's that fragile, why are we fighting for it?
A DP from ODM under Ruto would have zero independent authority. No control over the budget. No command over security organs. No real say in appointments. Just ceremonies, foreign trips, and the constant fear of impeachment if you grow too popular or step out of line. Is that what we fought for all these years? To become a deputy to someone else's vision?
The DP does not control the Cabinet, budgets, supervise ministries, appoint or dismiss Principal Secretaries, nor command the legislative agenda.
By going for DP, we are telling Ruto and UDA: "This is our ceiling. This is what satisfies us."
Game over.
Instead of demanding substantive positions that actually move the country – Treasury (to control money), Interior (security and grassroots), Energy and Infrastructure (the real cash cows), Foreign Affairs, Health, Education – we settle for a title that comes with a flag and a motorcade but zero muscle.
You negotiate from a position of strength by not taking the shiny object. You say: "We are equal partners. Give us the dockets that deliver for our people. Give us control in Parliament. Give us real influence or we walk."
second-highest
But once you take DP? Your demands become "greedy." "You already have the second-highest office, what more do you want?" they'll say. And the public will buy it because titles impress the uninformed.
ODM is not a small party begging to be co-opted. We are the party that has produced presidents in everything but name. We shook the country in 2007, 2013, 2017, and even 2022. We forced handshakes. We built the opposition that kept governments honest.
Raila Odinga – Baba – has always been bigger than any single position. The 2018 handshake didn't need him to be DP or PM. His influence came from his independence and the people's trust. When Gen-Zs exploded in 2024, Baba just waved a hand, and all cooled.
We already have people in the broad-based government. Good. Use that foothold to demand more – not to trade our future for one seat on the ticket.
Comrades, this DP talk is a trap. It is designed to neutralise ODM as a political force ahead of 2027 and beyond. It is meant to divide us, weaken our brand, and make us junior partners in someone else's project.
Reject it.
Demand real power. Demand positions that change lives.
The fact that every death in the bible was caused or influenced by God while satan killed absolutely no one out of his will, but satan is the evil one not God still baffles me aloooot
