I wish to formally raise a serious complaint about the unacceptable standard of service at the Nigerian Embassy in Prague.

Yesterday, I waited approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes to receive service. I returned today and have again waited for over 1 hour and 30 minutes. Citizens should not have to spend several hours waiting for basic consular services.

People come to the Embassy with jobs, families and other responsibilities, and some travel considerable distances. Yet applicants are subjected to excessive waiting, poor organization, inadequate communication and an apparent lack of urgency.

Even more concerning is that passport services are not provided in Prague, meaning Nigerians living in the Czech Republic may have to travel to another country simply to access passport services. This raises a fundamental question about the level and accessibility of consular services being provided to Nigerians in the Czech Republic.

Embassy staff are public servants representing the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Nigerians have a right to expect professionalism, efficiency, accountability and respect for their time.

What performance standards are Embassy employees required to meet? Who monitors their performance? Why should taxpayers continue funding a diplomatic mission if citizens cannot receive essential services efficiently?

I call on the Nigeria Immigration Service, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other responsible authorities to urgently review the Embassy’s operations, including staffing, employee performance, waiting times, appointment procedures and the availability of essential services such as passports.

If the problem is inadequate staffing, provide adequate staff. If it is poor management, improve the management. If employees consistently fail to perform their responsibilities, their performance should be reviewed and appropriate action taken.

If the Embassy’s services cannot be substantially improved and upgraded to an acceptable standard, including providing essential consular services to the Nigerian community it is established to serve, then the authorities should seriously consider whether there is any justification for continuing to operate the Embassy in its present form. Closure or a complete restructuring should be considered rather than maintaining a mission that cannot adequately serve its citizens.

Nigerians abroad should not have to suffer simply to receive services from their own government.
