In The Fifth Element (1997), the blue alien opera singer, Diva Plavalaguna, was played by Maïwenn.

Maïwenn has publicly said she met director Luc Besson when she was 12 and began a romantic relationship with him when she was 15.

Maïwenn has claimed that the relationship between Portman’s character (Mathilda) and Jean Reno’s character (Léon) in Léon: The Professional was partially inspired by her own real-life relationship with Besson, which began when she was 12 and he was 29.

In January 1993, at 16, she gave birth to their daughter, Shanna. She was 20 years old when filming on The Fifth Element began in early 1996.

During the production of the film, Besson left Maïwenn for the movie's lead actress, Milla Jovovich.

Maïwenn explicitly told investigators that when Besson abandoned her on the set of The Fifth Element, he targeted her physical appearance:

"When he left me, he told me that I didn’t have the body that suited him."

She further noted that Besson cut her off completely, refusing to acknowledge her successes or support their child financially:

"He didn't congratulate me for my Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and even stopped paying child support without taking the trouble to warn me."

Besson and Jovovich got married in 1997 before divorcing in 1999.
