On 8 January 2025, Jess Asato MP voted against the Conservative reasoned amendment to the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill (Division 74). That amendment called for a national statutory inquiry into grooming gangs and would have blocked the entire bill, including other child protection measures.

Labour MPs largely opposed it on procedural grounds. The Labour government later launched its own independent statutory inquiry into grooming gangs, which is now underway with updated terms of reference.
