@AIMind_Ai Yeah man its wild as hell. People been doing this for a while now especially for local AI models. 16GB just aint enough anymore and Nvidia knows it. They could easily ship more VRAM but then nobody would buy the next card. Heat gun and some denser chips do the job fine.
A single modification takes an RTX 4080 from 16GB to 32GB of VRAM.
The card ships with 16GB on a 256-bit bus, and that number is a business decision, not a physics one.
VRAM is the wall now. A 30B model in 4-bit wants about 20GB just to load. Miss the ceiling by 2GB and the whole thing spills into system RAM and crawls.
So the tier above costs double. Not for more shaders. For more memory.
