Teen charged with perjury after false rape claim in Mpumalanga
A 16-year-old girl has been charged with perjury after police discovered she fabricated a rape allegation to conceal a visit to a male friend.
The teen initially claimed she was r*ped while hitchhiking in Mpumalanga, prompting a police investigation.
After inconsistencies emerged, investigators determined the story was untrue, leading to the perjury charge.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Captain Sipho Ngubane stated, “False claims like this waste valuable resources and undermine the fight against gender-based violence (GBV).
We urge the public to report truthfully to ensure justice for genuine victims.
Foreign national arrested in Parklands with over R1 Million in cash, bank cards linked to multiple individuals
A 38-year-old foreign national was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday, 13 May 2025, in Parklands, Cape Town after members of the Provincial Operational Command Centre uncovered a stash of South African and foreign currency exceeding R1 million, along with a bag full of bank cards belonging to various individuals.
Acting on intelligence regarding suspected drug-related activities, officers raided a residence in Holly Crescent, Table View.
A search of the premises led to the discovery of the large sum of cash and the bank cards. According to police, the suspect failed to provide a credible explanation for possessing the items.
The suspect was taken into custody and is facing charges of possession of suspected stolen property and conspiracy to commit cybercrime. Further charges may be added as detectives from the Provincial Organised Crime Commercial Unit continue their investigation.
He is scheduled to appear before the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 15 May 2025.
