As the church, our way is one of justice, humility and truth telling, of honoring one another. Watching what unfolded at the Capitol today reflected much more Herod than Jesus. We must call it out and call one another to something better. Something more like Jesus.
Epiphany revealed King Herod’s profound insecurity and narcissism, and as a result his willingness to destroy the innocent in an attempt to retain power. The birth of Jesus introduced a whole new way then, and it does the same today.
Don’t get punked by your past. It will lie to you, distract you, try to get your attention, and then laugh at you for looking. Shame has one goal and one goal alone: to keep you cemented in a dark past while it hides a beautiful future from you.

Not everybody can stay home, and we owe a big debt of gratitude to health professionals, transit and airport workers, first responders, and everyone keeping our communities going. Leaders have to step up to support people whose lives and livelihoods take a hit in the weeks ahead.
