The levels of corruption in Malawi right now are shocking. Take this dubious K3 billion ADMARC deal for ma lona (tarpaulins). Is Mutharika aware of these things? Does he get a cut? Because why on earth would an 86 year old retired professor and President, already financially sorted for life, need all these billions? I genuinely don’t get it, and part of me doubts whether he is even aware of most of these things. I thought that at this stage of his life and career, his obsession would be LEGACY. Building hospitals, infrastructure and institutions that will outlive him. What more does he have to prove or accumulate except a good name and a country better than he found it?
I stand to be corrected!
Malawi’s 87-year-old President, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, has travelled to South Africa for medical treatment, although the government is describing the trip as a “private visit”.
Mutharika returned to power in October 2025. This is his fourth trip to South Africa since then. He is said to be battling a serious ailment that is being managed by South African doctors.
Malawi’s health facilities are in a dire state. Some hospitals do not even have water. Yet the president is spending millions of dollars travelling to South Africa in private jets for treatment instead of investing in local facilities; cancer care, dialysis and cardiac services that could benefit all Malawians.
This is one of Africa’s persistent problems. In many countries, presidents have to seek treatment abroad because their own health systems lack the facilities they need. South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and a few others are among the countries where presidents can receive treatment in their own countries.
Malawians voted for 87-year-old President Arthur Peter Mutharika, with many arguing that he was the best candidate among those on offer. Yet former Reserve Bank of Malawi Governor Dalitso Kabambe was also running. Malawi’s 2025 election had 17 presidential candidates.
Malawi is one of Africa’s tragic cases, where people often vote along tribal or regional lines instead of judging candidates by their competence and ability to govern.
It is also one of the world’s poorest countries. The World Bank puts Malawi’s 2025 gross domestic product at about US$14.9 billion, with GDP per capita at roughly US$672. Its 2025/26 national budget is estimated at K8.58 trillion or US$4.9 billion. The country is battling severe foreign-exchange shortages, fuel and fertiliser shortages, high inflation, food insecurity and a heavy debt burden.
Debt servicing takes a large share of government revenue. These are the conditions the government should be confronting by strengthening public services and the economy.

Connecting the dots: Wicknell Chivayo, gold smuggling, & terrorism.
We all know the brutal conflict in Sudan between the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) & the regular army has been raging since April 2023. But just yesterday, a massive bomb dropped in Malawi: General Paul Valentino Phiri was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau. The charge? Alleged involvement in property deals linked to "terrorism." In plain terms, he’s accused of helping arm Sudanese rebels with heavy weaponry.
This isn't a sudden development. Back in July 2025, a Platform for Investigative Journalism (PIJ) report revealed that US intelligence believed top Malawian military officials were secretly funnelling heavy arms to Sudan.
Now, this is where Wicknell Chivayo enters the frame. It’s well-documented that Chivayo met with former Malawian President Peter Mutharika multiple times, & he also had sit-downs with Lazarus Chakwera. While the investigators targeting General Phiri haven’t officially named the financial backer behind these massive weapon shipments—which are rumoured to be worth up to $4 billion—the word on the street points squarely at Chivayo. We all know Chivayo was just a front. There is really only one person who controls that kind of liquid cash, largely because they can’t use standard banking channels.
While there is no paper trail proving who funded the July 2025 weapons shipment, look at the timeline: on July 15, 2025, Chivayo flew into Malawi & met with then-President Chakwera. Is that just a coincidence? Highly unlikely. I mean days before the shipment.
To understand the scale of this, you have to look at the money. Gold is the lifeblood of the RSF; they control the mines in Darfur, mill the ore, & smuggle the metal out of Sudan. That’s where Kenya comes in as a major transit hub. Including Tanzania. In February 2025, Nairobi even hosted RSF political meetings, & Kenyan President William Ruto was spotted personally chauffeuring Chivayo around recently. Ruto himself has faced heavy accusations of holding personal & commercial ties to the RSF, mostly tied to gold smuggling. To add fuel to the fire, in June 2025, the Sudanese government claimed they discovered Kenyan-labelled weapons and ammunition hidden in RSF caches across Khartoum and Omdurman.
Chivayo simply knew too much. It's telling that he wasn't around to see General Phiri's arrest. Did the heat finally get to him? Did US intelligence catch up with him? Or did his handlers realize the net was closing in, choosing to eliminate him & his wife—who was by his side through it all—to erase their own ties to international terrorism?
What happened right after Chivayo’s helicopter crashed tells you everything you need to know. Within minutes, the army swarmed his mansion & completely locked it down. Nobody was allowed inside. Not family, not friends—absolutely no one.
Neighbours made complaints about mysterious digging in Chivayo’s garden. The excavation was so intense that tunnels began collapsing, causing cracks to ripple through the walls of neighbouring homes. Chivayo was hoarding billions in gold, diamonds, & cash on that property because the people he associated with couldn't—or wouldn't—use banks. Tanzania president even offered to send mercenaries to help secure the house.
The sanctioned Dagalo family, who fund the RSF, have deep ties here. RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo has held meetings with the exact same presidents we used to see Chivayo rubbing shoulders with. Including Rhamaposa who enjoyed an exclusive meeting with him.
Ultimately, Chivayo wanted to play with the big boys, but his pathological need to show off was his downfall. He ended up in a black bin bag. He was a careles operator who facilitated the funding of terrorism, smuggled gold, & laundered money, all while bleeding taxpayers dry to fund his lavish lifestyle.
As for what happens next, we’ll have to watch General Phiri’s case unfold.
Africa is a very strange continent. A dollar billionaire dies in a plane crash and more than 24 hours later, no company has come out to mourn it's founder.
Crazy thing is, the people we underestimated in school are the very ones running our governments today. And 20yrs from now, the loudest intellectuals on this app may still be on the TL with threads debating policies they never took the opportunity to help shape.
Intellectual discourse is important, but so is getting into the rooms where decisions are made. 2035 it is.
🚨🇸🇦 Tijjani Reijnders on moving to Saudi Arabia: “It’s money for generations of my family”.
“Once my playing career is over, I don’t want to have to work anymore. Of course, I probably wouldn’t have needed to work anymore after my contract at Manchester City either, but this move allows me to secure the future of the next generations of my family”.
“I’m not going to lie about that. By signing this contract, I can make sure even my grandchildren are financially secure, so why wouldn’t I do it?”.
The Educated of Africa are, in my view, top reason why this continent remains poor. Over 98% of corrupt people in govt have degrees, or diploma. They produce not so much but good donor reports, mediocre research papers, steal from govt, buy a plot, get a baddie, die. Mediocres
