Stop saying “F*ck ICE.” Tell us your plan to reform it.

Stop saying “Free Palestine.” Tell us your pathway to achieving a lasting peace.

Stop saying “Medicare for All.” Explain how you’re actually going to build the coalition and persuade enough lawmakers to pass it.

If candidates who campaign on slogans instead of governing continue to win primaries, then it’s no wonder Donald Trump is president again.

Something has gone wrong in our politics. While many Democrats focused on governing, media spaces were increasingly dominated by outrage pundits and political entertainers. We normalized some of the most deplorable voices and shifted the Overton window toward post-liberal politics.

Challenging institutions and questioning the status quo can be healthy and progressive. But, we should always ask who benefits when public trust in every institution is eroded. Remember, not everyone trying to tear something down is interested in building something better.

Our adversaries are laughing because, in today’s America, experienced legislators are expected to answer to online personalities and oyster farmers whose entire political program amounts to repeating slogans.

The Biden administration didn’t have to chant “Free Palestine” to pursue a two-state solution, increase humanitarian aid, support Palestinian self-determination, oppose Hamas, and apply pressure on the far-right Israeli government.

The Obama administration didn’t have to abolish immigration enforcement to pursue immigration reform, expand protections for immigrants, and explore practical ways to improve our system.

The Clinton administration didn’t spend every day campaigning on universal health care. Instead, it focused on economic growth, deficit reduction, and policies that contributed to greater financial stability for many Americans, while pursuing health care reforms that ultimately fell short.

Could Democratic administrations have done better? Absolutely. Every administration leaves unfinished work.

But people who dismiss decades of incremental progress as meaningless while offering nothing beyond slogans are not interested in offering solutions.

America is not perfect, but it is a great country. Its strength comes from electing representatives who understand that governing requires responsibility, coalition-building, compromise, and results, not political entertainers selling snake oil, repeating catchphrases, or turning politics into a reality show.

Be gone, @grahamformaine. You’re every bit as disgraceful as the people who stood by your side and still, to this day, refuse to take accountability for the lies they’ve fed to Americans who still believe in our democracy!

When the last Confederate veteran died in the 1950s Ulysses S. Grant III, grandson of that guy there on the left and chairman of the Civil War Centennial, remarked that his death was "cause for great national mourning."

This hand-wringing and pearl-clutching over "treason" is a mid-to-late 20th century invention largely drummed up by people whose families hadn't even arrived before the Civil War, and to whom Americanism as an identity remains largely a mystery. It's stolen valor over an event they don't even really understand.

On this day in 1863, the entire Union army hung on a single regiment holding the end of the line, and they were led by a schoolteacher who was about to do something nobody had told him to do.

Here's why that one hill mattered so much. The Union line at Gettysburg curled along the high ground like a giant fishhook, and Little Round Top was the very tip of it, the far left end of everything. If the Confederates got around that end, they could roll up the whole army from the side, folding it up like a rug. And for most of the afternoon, incredibly, nobody was even guarding it. It was pure luck that an engineer riding by noticed the hill was naked and screamed for troops before the enemy arrived.

The men who got rushed up to the very end of that line were the 20th Maine, and their commander was Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, a man who a couple of years earlier had been teaching rhetoric at a small college. Now he was told the plainest order in the army. This is the end of the line. You cannot retreat. Hold this ground or the army dies.

So they held. Wave after wave of Alabama troops came climbing up through the rocks and trees, and the Maine men fought them off and fought them off until their cartridge boxes were empty and half of them were down. One more charge and it was over. Chamberlain had nothing left to shoot with.

So he did the crazy thing. He ordered his exhausted men to fix bayonets and charge downhill, swinging the line like a gate slamming shut. The move was so sudden and so insane that the attacking Confederates, who thought they were about to win, broke and ran or threw up their hands. A professor with an empty gun and a wild idea saved the flank, and maybe the battle.

@xwanyex The protections that everyone else gets do not get capitalized into a fixed supply asset. In fact, if the protections were removed, land rents would decrease to the economic benefit of non landowners. This is why LVT is “more fair”.

Even if you take the conservative defense of each ICE killing, you’re left with “We haphazardly scaled up a poorly trained police force to storm into neighborhoods that voted against the president, where we antagonize the local population until someone resists arrest, and then we kill them,” which is morally horrendous on top of being an absurd way to do immigration policy.
