I think many women are traumatised by men, patriarchal violence and the injustices they can’t stop seeing in everyday life. I think many are also fearful of the rise of redpill culture and conservatism.

To the armys reacting harshly to joon and hobi - I think it’s also good to remember that the bulk of your pain is 99.999% attributable to the summation of your life experiences, past traumas and anxieties. Proportionality matters too. Let’s be fair to them as well.

my cup is not quite full, but it’s more than half-filled. I echo op’s sentiment. I have enough empathy in my heart for joon, hobi, bts, all the armys defending and feeling heartache for them, and even the armys unable to walk out of their hurt and rage at them.

Everyone’s feelings are valid - we cannot control how we feel. But it simply doesn’t follow that all your words and actions are valid too. You know you can maim and hurt others when you are upset. You know that you owe basic human respect to everyone. Try not to say or do things you would regret. You can’t stuff words back into a box or press undo on hurtful things you said.

I know it’s hard to have excess empathy for others when your own feelings are unaddressed, especially when your mind is telling you that said others are rubbing salt into your wounds or worsening an injustice you already perceive. And I mean it to armys on all sides.

You have great capacity for love and empathy. You have it in you to be fair to people you love and those around you. Sit with your feelings privately, talk about it with friends or in a GC. Take care of yourselves.

Your analysis is good but it ignores one thing. When the Beatles were first rising to fame, it was women who supported them. Women, who were ridiculed for fangirling and “Beatlemania”.

As the Beatles gained more pop culture legitimacy (and as their lyrics and legacy got more misogynistic), more men became Beatles fans. Every Beatles ‘expert’ was a man. A Rolling Stone list of 10 “best books” on the Beatles are all written by male authors.

Today, the Beatles are thought of as “classic dad rock”. There is a masculine, classic edge to them. Men have taken over their fandom, and play the role of gatekeepers and tastemakers - while avid female interest in the Beatles gets treated with the same degree of suspicion directed at young women wearing band T-shirts. Female Beatles fans are subjected to questions from male fans “testing their knowledge” on the band, and suggesting that even if they do know the band, they aren’t appreciating them properly. How ironic, when it was women who first spotted a diamond in the rough.

This is the underlying misogyny underpinning the likes of what men like Gene Simmons had to say about BTS. It is not the number of fans, but the number of MALE fans, by whom the seriousness and worthiness of music is measured.

Misogyny, and a contempt for anything women support and enjoy, is what your analysis was missing.

Grammys are always doing this lmao 🫩 They create new categories for non-white artists so the RA doesn’t have to vote for poc in the main categories.

Ever since the Latin Grammys launched in 2000, only ONE Spanish-language album (Bad Bunny) has been nominated for AOTY. That is one AOTY nomination in 23 years, despite Latin music consistently outselling other mainstream names.

Its also not new because we’ve seen how they did this to black artists. Just shunting them into “urban” categories (changed the name 3x from Best Urban/Alternative Performance, to Best Urban Contemporary Album, to "Best Progressive R&B Album"). Black artists have gotten only 12% of AOTY nods, despite rap and R&B accounting for a much larger market share.

The new cat does nothing but “other” Asian artists with an outsized cultural and commercial presence in the west. Adding more silos benefits white pop artists, and contains the Asian artists who have proven that they can compete (and win) on mainstream terms. This is a “you can’t sit with us” category that adds silos, and poc music fans should not be celebrating segregation.
