Ideologies distort values by overemphasizing the self ("self-realization) or erasing the self in favor of the community. The deeper problem is human, though, and affects all cultures.

@Amphianda The hiring process is such that the least tolerant ideology around is statistically destined to become the next dominant paradigm. Secular humanists were intolerant of theism. Marxism was intolerant of theism and secular humanism. Gaiaism is intolerant of all three. You'll see.

Separating the occult from theism seems to be the key to her success.

Thus, theism could continue to be pronounced illegitimate by scientism, but the occult would now be epistemically acceptable.

@Thinkb4Learning Dewey was Nietzschean in his conviction that life was meaningless, that humans had to construct meaning. Faith in socialism was how Dewey got beyond secular humanism's "self-realization" as one's only meaning-giving goal in life. "Selflessness" not via love but via the state.

Anyone who differed with his deeply divisive philosophy of education was denounced by Dewey as "provincial" and "divisive" (his words).

When we opt for pleasure over meaning, using people for pleasure over caring, we replace meaningful relationships with power relationships.
Two hundred years of utilitarian (hedonistic) ethics prepared the ground for a culture that sees only power relationships.
