“It’s had to find new ideas!”
It really is. "Everything is taken." (Not everything… but a lot. More than ever.)
Fortunately, you can be different in another way: Style, design, niche, geography, language, open/closed, integration/closed, and more.
Your website is not Wikipedia.
The point is not to just convey information but to make them want it (whatever you're selling).
Remember the 4 Cs of copywriting:
- clear
- concise
- credible
- compelling
The compelling bit is the most important part.
Yes, the website copy absolutely needs to be clear and credible (it's the foundation).
Conciseness helps make sure they actually read it.
BUT -- they won't sign up/buy/subscribe if it's not compelling.
What makes it compelling:
- Specific (as opposed to vague and generic)
- Relevant (talks to their actual desired gains and pains they wanna avoid)
- Teases the promised land (ooh I want that!)
- Makes claims of value to be delivered (outcomes)
- Interesting (not boring!)
- Differentiated (clear why choose you over alternatives)
Your thing is not best for everyone, but it's maybe best for people who care about X and Y, you're the best for those folks because Z. State that clearly.
Yes, it's hard.
How to know if your copy is compelling enough? Run a message test to find out.
