Mostly esoteric banter about international horse-racing; occasional quips on trademark law; fraternity politics; and (gently) harassing horse-racing media.
@ABC7Jory Can anyone speak to the likelihood of this thing getting blown out to sea, picking up marine life, and then blowing back ashore. A sharknado-type event?
KY Derby = mint julep, Preakness = Black Eyed Susan, Belmont = has had like 4, currently the Belmont Jewel.
Anyone know which other culturally iconic G1’s have official cocktails? Can’t be uniquely American. @nickluck@AndrewNJHawkins
@Rooke_bay@iAmMrCarson We are going to have to agree to disagree on whether it’s “standard.” Google Snopp at Kentucky BB, clean lyrics doesn’t mean free from “problems” in some other way. I think we can agree, it’s better for everybody if the host is familiar with an Act BEFORE hiring them.
@Rooke_bay@iAmMrCarson Yes, I do. I’d expect the contract to say something like “play radio versions” and Artist would agree because a gig like that’s a big deal. BUT I don’t think an Artist agrees beyond that, such as HOW they have to do the agreed song. Like Fergie’s All-Star game national anthem.
@Rooke_bay@iAmMrCarson That’s not quite the argument I was making, see my other thread for the lengthier explanation. Of course, they sign contracts and yes they oftentimes have stipulations (length, that any pyro be approved by a fire marshal, for example). My point is about creative control.
@dig6394@oddjobscelle@iAmMrCarson Sorry, I was trying to stay under character limit and lost some clarity in the process. I’ll thread here in necessary. To clarify, a requirement to self-censor written in the contract requires spelling out what the artist is expected to self-censor within the CONTRACT. 1/?
@Rooke_bay@iAmMrCarson I assure you it is NOT a standard practice, but fair point about “legitimate.” Better to have said “professional.” That’s just intended to separate out like a local band who are just happy to have a show, they will agree to restrictions.
@dig6394@oddjobscelle@iAmMrCarson as they would have known what to expect and decided it was appropriate for the gathering. Lastly, my examples above have all actually happened. Snoop is banned for life from the University of Kansas over something similar (google it for the whole story, but here’s the video) 8/9
@dig6394@oddjobscelle@iAmMrCarson with what goes on at Artist’s performances BEFORE they decide to try and hire Artist. I suspect that’s what happened here. Whomever booked AKA clearly was not familiar with Trick Daddy or they never would have booked him -or- they would have but wouldn’t have been offended 8/?
@dig6394@oddjobscelle@iAmMrCarson The difference under a contract someone is TELLING Artist what he MUST do vs. Artist DECIDING for himself what is and is not appropriate for someone. Of course, Group can always say “agree this goes in the contract, or we’ll hire someone else.” And a Group should be familiar 7/?
@dig6394@oddjobscelle@iAmMrCarson and if word got around on social I did it would make me look bad and I’d never get to play an Islamic convention again.” Artist just exercised creative-control over the set list. He self-censored without anyone forcing him to through a contract. 7/?
@dig6394@oddjobscelle@iAmMrCarson So let’s say the Contract give Artist full creative control. Artist has got a reputation and future income stream to protect. And decides on their OWN “this show is at an Islamic convention, probably shouldn’t do my hit song ‘Eat More Pork’ tonight. That would piss them off. 6/?
@dig6394@oddjobscelle@iAmMrCarson terminology. Did Artist comply with contract? You can see how the part in the contract about what an Artist must self-censor can get longer, and longer. Someone telling you what you’re REQUIRED to self-censor is no different than straight-up censorship. 5/?
@dig6394@oddjobscelle@iAmMrCarson Let’s say the contract is clearer “Artist agrees to self-censor lyrics.” That’s clearer. Artist self-censors all the swear words, Sings song with lyric “put your hands up if you like having your vagina stimulated by a man’s tongue.” Artist removed swears and used medical 4/?
@dig6394@oddjobscelle@iAmMrCarson Group mad at Artist says “we’re not paying you you agreed the performance would be Self-Censored. Artist says “what are you talking about the performance was elf-censored. I kept my songs clean, and the dancers had the dancers keep their bikinis on the whole time.” 3/?
@dig6394@oddjobscelle@iAmMrCarson If it’s not spelled out in the contract, you can end up with misunderstandings: for example “Artist agrees to Self-Censor” is written in. At show, Artist sings radio-edits while backup dancers who pole dance in bikinis (no nudity). Group is offended by dance routine. 2/?
