Sold a $185 put on $RTX Oct 23 (Nov 20 expiry) for $314. 3 days later it was worth half that, so I bought it back and kept $157.
Lesson: hit half the max profit in days? Closing early frees your cash and takes the risk off.
Do you close at 50% or ride it out?
I mostly sell options, and days like today are a reminder that income isn't guaranteed. Neither is a covered call above your cost basis. It is what it is.
$GOOGL down ~8.7% after hours on an earnings miss. $MSFT up ~4%.
That's why I don't sell puts through earnings unless I'd be fine owning the stock at that strike. The premium's nice till it isn't.
Curious to know your strategy if you do trade around earnings?
Nasdaq up 1.2% today and $MSFT, $GOOGL, $AMZN all report this week.
Green days make it tempting to chase the fattest premium. I'd rather pick the price I'd actually be fine owning the stock at and start there.
How do you pick your strike?
Busy week ahead. About a third of the S&P 500 reports earnings, and the Fed decides on rates Wednesday at 2pm ET.
Before you sell a put, check the earnings date. If it lands before expiration, that extra premium is pay for gap risk.
Only sell on stocks you'd own.
Fed decision Wed, then $MSFT and $GOOGL report after the close, $AMZN Thu.
Earnings = fatter premiums, but bigger overnight gaps. Only sell a put at a strike you'd be OK owning after a bad report.
Selling into earnings this week, or sitting it out?
From megacaps to small businesses, everyone is going to cut spending on whatever AI can handle today. Now ask yourself what AI will be able to handle a year from now. This is going to hit the economy in ways we've never seen. Buckle up.
BREAKING: Microsoft, $MSFT, is offering buyouts to 60,000 workers as part of the companyβs efforts to cut costs amid AI adoption, per Bloomberg.
Personnel on select teams in the US, Canada, India, and the UK at a vice president level and below will be eligible.
This reflects ~27% of Microsoft's total workforce.
Closed: $RTX 11/20 $185 put β
Sold it with 28 days to go for $3.15 a share. My standing order to buy back at 50% of the credit filled at $1.57, just 3 days later.
Kept: $1.58 a share
Return: 0.85% on the cash set aside, in 3 days
The annualized number looks huge (104%) only because it closed so fast.
The real win is that the cash is free again for the next trade.
Selling a put into a report?
Fed decision Wednesday. $MSFT and $GOOGL report after Wednesday's close, $AMZN Thursday. Premiums run rich before earnings because the risk is real.
Pick a strike you'd be OK owning.
A few years ago I'd have told you rentals were the path to passive income.
Today my options account covers my mortgage. No tenants, no repair bills, no chasing rent.
Same goal. Completely different way of thinking about how income gets made.
Big week for premium sellers: Fed decides Wed (~90% odds of a hold per CME FedWatch), then $MSFT & $GOOGL report after the close, $AMZN Thu.
Earnings premiums look juicy, but they price in gap risk.
Selling puts into earnings this week, or sitting it out?
Big week: Fed decides Wednesday, $MSFT and $GOOGL report Wednesday, $AMZN Thursday.
Premiums run rich into earnings for a reason: one report can gap a stock right past your strike.
Are you selling puts into earnings this week, or sitting it out?
S&P 500 and Nasdaq down two weeks in a row, Brent oil near $117, Fed on Wednesday.
Red weeks often mean fatter put premiums, but a bigger check isn't a reason to own a stock.
What's your rule for picking a strike when the market's shaky?
The VIX briefly topped 20 on Friday before closing at 19.45. More fear means fatter option premiums, but also bigger swings. Wheel sellers: you don't have to trade every day. Pick strikes you'd honestly be happy to own and let patience do the work. #options
You don't need a big account to start the wheel.
Just put up a new free lesson on doing it with about $5k: how I'd set it up, the rules I stick to, and a real UPS trade from my own account (+$1,046 after fees on $9,700).
No fluff, just how it works:

Quick win this week π’
Sold 3 IBKR $75 puts on Monday for $343.
Bought them back Wednesday for $171.
$172 kept in 2 days. I don't wait for expiration. When I've made half, I close it and free up the cash for the next trade.
