Performing ‘Karitas’, a composition of mine that is especially close to my heart, at the first edition of @whenpathsmeet was an unforgettable experience. This piece brings together words from Fuzuli and Hildegard of Bingen, along with verses from other great luminaries.

It was an honor to bring it to life with the incredible @CappellaAdam and Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra, alongside my own ensemble and the brilliant Erhu maestro @guogan. I still have fond memories of debuting this piece at the wonderful @hollandfestival , and I’m deeply grateful to them for believing in ‘When Paths Meet’ and making it all possible.

‘Every breath carries the song of love to us.’ — Rumi

‘Meditations on a Musette by Couperin’ is one of the brand-new pieces that debuted at the @philharmonie as part of ‘When Paths Meet Vol. 2’.

Due to my deep love of Western Classical music (particularly Early and Baroque) and in honour of our host country, I chose to use François Couperin’s ‘Musette from the Royal Concerts’ (1722) as the starting point for this new composition.

Moving into another world of my musical roots, I turned to the lyrical melodic phrasing and tonal system of the Turkic Azerbaijani Segah mugham to further articulate and mirror the gracefulness  of Couperin’s Baroque piece. ‘When Paths Meet Vol. 2’ was a unique gathering of musicians from diverse backgrounds.

It provided me with an incredible opportunity to compose this work drawing on their diversity, a work that I hope opens a door to a world where the language of music communicates at a level beyond words. They brought this composition to life and they did so brilliantly. Immense thanks to the stellar soloists and specialist musicians, to The Scoring Orchestra, The Metaboles, and The Sami Yusuf Ensemble for this remarkable collaboration.

Lyrics in Persian, Arabic, and Turkish are from the poetry of Rumi, Abu al-Hasan al-Shushtari, and Pir Sultan Abdal.
