"Granger, give my cauldron a quick stir, won't you?" He says this without looking up from the Arnica syrup he's in the midst of tediously extracting.
She snorts and gives him a mocking little smile. "Sure, Malfoy. I'll do it for a kiss."

It's always worse in the summer.
When Draco wakes up, he knows all too well that the body next to his isn't hers. The arm over his chest is too pale, the hands too soft.
He thinks of golden skin. Calloused hands that spent hours upon hours catching racing thoughts on parchment.
quick life recap:

He trails his fingers gently over the marble, as if it were her skin. Some days it's bearable, some days he feels like he could die from the pain of it, even decades later. This was one of those days. "I wish you were here."
It's always worse in the summer.
Granger is there, of course.
"Hello," he murmurs. He knows better than to expect a reply by now. "I dreamt of you again. Remember that one summer a few years after the war?"
The only sounds come from the birds and the rustling leaves. He settles himself a few feet away.
"The one where you led me up that ridiculously hard trail," he continues. "I complained the whole way there but—as with everything—you were right. The waterfall was gorgeous. That was the best summer of my life, I think."
He cancels all his appointments for the day, to Astoria's eternal chagrin. She glares at him, exasperation and annoyance clear in the set of her mouth.
("But Draco, my mother—")
He's already spinning through the fireplace before he hears the end of her sentence.
Daydreams of a summer long ago eat at his mind, on a tire swing over a waterfall deep in the mountains. Bright brown eyes that dared him to jump in. A pretty pink mouth that laughed in earnest when he finally caught up to her in the water.
So he decides to see her.

When Draco wakes up, he knows all too well that the body next to his isn't hers. The arm over his chest is too pale, the hands too soft.
He thinks of golden skin. Calloused hands that spent hours upon hours catching racing thoughts on parchment.
The rest of the day he spends in a stupor, going through the motions and trying his best to shake off the phantom sensation of lithe arms around his shoulders.
He jumps when Astoria laughs softly during tea with her mother because it's not quite the right cadence.
"Last time I came in here and found you all – mopey – you'd been staring at Granger," said Blaise with a raised brow. "And here I find you – a year later – looking all mopey – staring at Granger."
