The Philippine adaptation of the Thai blockbuster horror-comedy ‘Pee Mak’ has earned high praise from popular film review platform Goldwin Reviews, which declared the Filipino version better than the original.

In a review posted on October 14, Goldwin Reviews gave ‘Pee Mak,’ directed by Victor Villanueva, a rating of four out of five stars, praising its distinctly Filipino humor, cultural references, strong ensemble cast, and emotional storytelling.

“Definitely better than the original,” the reviewer declared, adding that the adaptation stands on its own regardless of whether audiences have seen the Thai film.

The review particularly highlighted how the Filipino adaptation successfully transformed the material into something more relatable to local audiences rather than simply reproducing the original.

While the Thai version was described as more restrained, atmospheric, and effective in its horror elements, the Philippine adaptation reportedly excelled in comedy, characterization, cultural relevance, and emotional impact.

Among the distinctly Filipino touches were references to mythical creatures such as the tiyanak, kapre, tikbalang, and manananggal. The film also replaced certain elements of the original, including its charades sequence, with familiar Filipino entertainment such as ‘Pinoy Henyo.’

Goldwin Reviews also praised the performances of the supporting cast, particularly TJ Valderrama, whose comedic timing and delivery were singled out as major strengths.

Gian Bernardino likewise received recognition for demonstrating his acting abilities beyond singing, while Candy Pangilinan was commended for her consistently energetic performance.

The review acknowledged that lead stars Bea Binene and Wilbert Ross initially appeared overshadowed by the supporting ensemble but eventually delivered the emotional weight needed to complete the story.

Binene was particularly praised for her dramatic performance, while the chemistry between the two stars helped make their big-screen pairing a promising debut.

Despite the positive assessment, Goldwin Reviews also pointed out technical shortcomings, including occasionally overpowering musical scoring, uneven audio dubbing, and tight camera framing that limited the film’s visual atmosphere.

Nevertheless, the reviewer maintained that the adaptation’s strengths outweighed its weaknesses.

“From a Filipino standpoint, the Philippine adaptation is definitely better than the original, primarily because of its unique elements deeply rooted in Filipino culture,” the review stated.

Goldwin Reviews also emphasized that the film should not be judged merely as a competitor to its Thai predecessor but as an adaptation specifically created for Filipino audiences.

“This film is not made to compete with other versions, but for Filipinos to enjoy — making it all the more beautiful.”

Written for the Philippine screen by Alpha Habon and Roni Benaid, ‘Pee Mak’ stars Bea Binene, Wilbert Ross, Vandolph Quizon, Jairus Aquino, TJ Valderrama, and Gian Bernardino.

The film opened in Philippine cinemas nationwide on October 14, 2026.

I think the best thing about PEEMAK PH is.
Di siya nakakahiyang ipromote.
Di nakakahiyang mangdarag ng mga tao to watch it kase alam mong lalabas silang masaya.
Di siya yung pinupush lang ng fans dahil fan sila ng actors.

Pinupush siya kase deserve niyang mapanuod ng lahat.
