Sterling surprises markets this morning with much better GDP figures than expected. GDP came in at 0.2%, beating consensus by 0.3%.

The pound has slumped to an all-time low against the dollar after the Chancellor hinted at more tax cuts to come after after last week’s Budget. Traders have begun the week where they left off the last with GBP trading at the lowest point since the 1980’s

Following this months BoE meeting, GBP has taken an even deeper plunge. The Bank hiked interest rates by 50bps, softer than market expectation of 75bps.

Following poor economic figures from the UK this week GBP has continued to slide for 8 days back-to-back. The dollar is currently trading in the 1.2560s, this is the lowest we have seen GBP/USD trade since March 2020.

GBP has enjoyed a well needed rally this morning pushing GBP/EUR into the 1.2080s. GBP/USD is recovering some of the losses seen over the last month too, trading at 1.3090s at the time of writing.
