There were 2 groups of individuals that fled the British isles for religious reasons, both “Christian” puritans and pilgrims. Puritans wanted to reform the England church (thinking the Christian church was still too catholic) while pilgrims wanted to separate themselves completely. The main thing to remember is there weren’t fleeing to fight for universal religious freedom. Rather state enforced religion (Islam anyone?) so it was a group of Christian’s fleeing prosecution and state enforced thought, not “everyone should be able to do whatever they want”, that was a broad idea that started way past the founding of the USA. Get your facts straight.
