You may think of films as a waste of time and actors as koothadis undeserving of serious attention. But give the masterfully crafted Baramulla a shot, and let its poignant powerful storytelling change your mind.

For decades, our cinematic voices were either muted or forced to shout slogans and lectures, stripped of any nuance and subtlety. Won't blame them because we were practically forced out of this medium by gatekeepers and shouting was the only way to even be heard.

But Baramulla is the return of our exiled voices in powerful whispers. Its film language is horror, and what could be a more apt genre to describe the genozide and forced exodus of a people than horror? The ghosts of this cinema shall haunt anybody with a conscience. Yes, anybody.

It respects the medium and conveys everything visually, not with words, its message is in its metaphors, not lectures. It respects the viewer's intelligence and does not spoonfeed or manipulate you. It’s what happens when suppressed truth finds a camera that listens. This is the kind of filmmaking our side deserves. You need to know nothing more about the film's plot, just watch this masterpiece and be moved.
