@Chen1900FU@Chen1900FU It's very shameful and makes me mad & sad. I very much honour those who fought back to create change under heavy opposition & unfair treatment, self-determination, creation of ACCHS's, changes of gov policy. Many groups fighting for rights & still are. #NURSING1008
@QuyenLe1369@QuyenLe1369 & @JIEYULI8 I agree this is a profoundly powerful and inspiring statement and has many facets. The honour that is owed, the suffering and loss, the hope of the future, recognition, reform and coming together. #NURSING1008
#NURSING1008 Using appropriate terminology is important for cultural safety/reducing power-differentials. Language used @ health services can be a positive or negative experience for patients & colleagues. need awareness of diversity & our own cultures influence on our language.
Govt failure poverty deficit lens lack of basic needs racism abuse= intergenerational trauma=lost SEWB=high suicide rates incarceration early death. Uluru statement heart=hope search empowerment belief fair & better future be heard truth of history told =better Aust #NURSING1008
First nation people's - vast diversity of culture & lives 500 language groups were living as autonomous nations across Australia pre-invasion - just a glimpse into their complex ways of knowing and being, curial elements of health the biomedical model overlooks #NURSING1008
@nurseezyy@nurseezyy I agree with you. As nurses who are aware we can stand up - advocate against racism and negative assumptions in our workplace and community. Work together to reduce fear and promote SEWB holistically #NURSING1008
@WESKER_CSL @WESKER_CSL learning about lock hospitals was sickening, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people left to die and from diseases forced upon them by the people leaving them to die. Mentally struggled with this knowledge so horrifying.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health is holistic
Belonging and connecting to everything around you, land, culture, spirit, ancestors, family and community
Health view-point 'whole of life' not just 'whole of body'
Holistic health, holistic care #NURSING1008
SEWB - the freedom to communicate needs and feelings, - ability to love and be loved - the ability to cope with stress; - being able to relate, create and assert oneself - having options for change that help development of a problem-solving approach (AHMAC, 2017). #NURSING1008
@Krishna97698287@Krishna97698287 I found "Kanyini" so enlightening, the wholeness - connection who wouldn't want to be part of it. Amazing, beautiful culture!
@Jezebel04638241@jezebel04638241 I was so angry, how can this be happening, not good enough. Lets help the change needed! Speak up to stop bad practice and mistreatment. #NURSING1008
#NURSING1008 Assumptions + negative or biased assumptions may lead to culturally unsafe practice. Nurses - promote health, prevent illness, restore health and alleviate suffering. Assumptions don't lead - Nurses have ethical duty to CARE + respect = leading to cultural safety.
Language matters - important to always remember that weโre not just using terms to refer to historical events or abstract groups - talking about real people. Listening to a personโs choice - to how theyโre referred to is an essential part of respecting that person #NURSING1008
Cultural safety and closing the gap is every ones responsibility. The closing the gap report 2020 - there are positive signs that working together can accelerate progress and achieve better outcomes. Lets keep listening, learning, acknowledging and improving. #NURSING1008
Institutional and professional customs, designed to efficiently manage and deliver effective health care, may leave clients with feelings of powerlessness as well as loss of autonomy and identity. #NURSING1008
Communication is the foundation for the delivery of accessible, culturally responsive and safe health care. Consumer-centred care- supports, enables active and informed participation by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers in decisions about their own care #NURSING1008
Colonisation, misused and abused Aboriginal protection policy over many years damaged, dispossessed and denied Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people of their lives, health and wellbeing. The profound effects of this history are still be felt today. #NURSING1008
