@SeemaItani@SeemaItani This is a good point. Following The Cultural Respect Frame would help us as nursing students. It would help us to understand and respect the rights when we are caring for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients.#nursing1008
#Nursing1008 CVD is very prominent in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander. It is one of the main reasons for the massive health gap. It's upsetting to see how much it impacts the younger generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People, even in the present society.
@Feliceflinders@Feliceflinders Cultural Safety is important for both patients and nurses. It allows patients to feel respected, understood and safe. Whilst for nurses it allows us to demonstrate empathy, understanding and becoming aware of everyone's differences. #Nursing1008
@Whittsend3@Whittsend3 I agree It's really upsetting how only when health conditions got really poor and appalling, people nationally and internationally become aware of the impacts it has on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. It could have been prevented. #NURSING1008
#NURSING1008#WHO It's interesting how poor the health status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people got, that even the WHO caught wind of poor health conditions in 1967.
@Garrett81894168 I agree, suicide and mental health is such a taboo topic for so many people and many cultures. However, as next generation nurses we need to be aware so we know what to do and how to support #FirstNations people, while ensuring #culturalsafety. #nursing1008
#NURSING1008 Rhonda's story was upsetting. She tells us about her experiences as a child to 'pass' as white and how important it was for her grandmother to help her achieve this. To throw away her Aboriginal heritage and identity just to be accepted into society. Broke my heart.
#NURSING1008 Racism - for decades has been a problem. A problem that impacts SEWB of children from all generations. Shaping the world through the eyes of the beholder. As racism continues so does mental illnesses. Thus, cultural safety is important to support the next generation.
#NURSING1008 Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander pre-invasion healthcare was quite amazing! It is through "caring for Elders and eating native bush foods". Not only to prevents diseases but also enables "holistic care" resulting in a good health and good life during this era.
#NURSING1008#MelanieHogan#Kanyini Kanyini really opens one's eyes and mind. It showed Australia's History from Aboriginal Peoples perspective.
It showed how past actions can create damaging long lasting consequences. Ongoing pain and suffering for Aboriginal communities.
#NURSING1008 Today's activity in class was very insightful. Learning about the timeline of Aboriginal history and British invasion. The consequences and affects it has had on the health of Aboriginal Peoples, even in today's society the impacts of the past is still present.
@ItaniSeema @ItaniSeema Learning about the history of Aboriginal Peoples was quite upsetting. Knowing all this made me feel really angry and unable to comprehend how humans are capable of treating each other the way the British treated the Aboriginal Peoples, upto most recent years.
#NURSING1008 The Cultural Respect Framework is a guideline to help nurses understand Aboriginal health and cultures. Allowing nurses to provide the best possible care for Aboriginal Peoples in a respectful manner.
#nursing1008 Analysing bones and fossils have help establish Aboriginal Peoples' health status pre-invasion, indicating diseases and illnesses were very prevelent within the Aboriginal communities. Two common diseases include Yaws and Trachoma.
@Amrit898518 The dreaming stories within the artworks are always so beautiful and inspiring. I've always enjoyed listening to the dreaming and interpretting the artworks. Great post! 😊
In highschool I had learnt about Aboriginal Peoples and knew there were different mobs BUT wasn’t aware of SO many mobs around Australia until I saw the map. It's my first time seeing the map so I am very surprised. There is so much more for me to learn in this topic. #NURS1008
The Stolen Generation: An estimate of roughly 20,000 to 25,000 children were removed from their families. The families were under the impression their children would become 'civilised'. Instead the children were kidnapped, 'exploited' as slaves and guides by settlers. #NURS1008
