to the 2.7 people reading, here is the dev update of the photo editing widget I am creating in UE5.3. It can import, rotate, flip, and save a UTexture2D. It can change it to a grayscale, negative texture, and lets you erase and paint over the texture. #UnrealEngine#cpp
when people say "oh they CGI'd her in" or "oh they de-aged him" and think "the computer" did it, this is really what's going on
decades of study of human facial anatomy, a deep stack of scanning, modeling, capture & animation systems, and endless, painstaking finessing by humans
Unreal 5 is a great engine that allows artists to get technical empowering games to be more innovative than ever. bad performance comes from poor planning from the start, and not enough engineering staff, not inherently from the engine.
Wow, Gemini 3.1 Pro just crushed one of my test problems no other model could solve.
"Write a photorealistic 3D ocean simulation"
3D graphics is extremely hard. It has to encode 9-10 techniques based in physics. Being off by just 1 number can lead to bonkers results
Running this on a 6-year-old potato 🥔
Engine Scalability: High + realtime reflections = ~20-30fps.
For large edge-of-city water w/ little interaction, a pre-captured TextureCube would massively boost performance. I overshot the vertex density on the water plane mesh as well.
Followed 🐐 Ben Cloward tutorials.
Rebuilt everything as HLSL material functions. Used UE sample for cheap SSR + custom refraction workaround.
Interactions limited to one object (need multi-object normal accumulation).
Caustics looking great.
@0xJ05H@magicblock@solana@MagicIntern Crazy stuff man. Love it. I have 2 questions tho, did you have to extend the sdk for your use case? And having worked on both the mainstream game engines how difficult do you think it'll be to port this functionality to unreal?
its funny that an entire decade of cool looking consumer products was caused by the addition of NURBS to CAD. it wasnt that this stuff naturally looks futuristic, it just suddenly became possible to model, so *became* the look of futuristic stuff for a brief unforgettable moment
