It represents the relationship between the players and the Benfica supporters — a gesture of respect, gratitude and unity.

At the time, Benfica’s Estádio da Luz was suspended so the team was playing at the Estádio Nacional (National Stadium) in Jamor. After a match against CUF, Benfica players lined up in front of their supporters and made the bow for the first time.
