They called it the Harlem of the South.
Then they built a highway through it.
Most people have heard of Harlem.
Very few know that one of the communities that helped inspire the Harlem Renaissance was right here in Jacksonville, Florida.
Its name was LaVilla.
Founded by freed Black Americans after the Civil War, LaVilla became one of the most influential Black cultural communities in the United States.
🎵 The first documented public blues performance in American history happened here.
📖 James Weldon Johnson, author of Lift Every Voice and Sing, grew up here.
✍🏾 Zora Neale Hurston worked here.
🎹 Ray Charles performed here.
✊🏾 A. Philip Randolph organized here.
Then, in the 1950s, Interstate 95 was built directly through the heart of LaVilla.
Homes were demolished.
Black-owned businesses disappeared.
Churches were lost.
A thriving cultural district that took generations to build was divided by concrete.
Today, thousands of people drive over this historic ground every day without realizing what was once there.
History isn't always erased with fire.
Sometimes it's erased with concrete.
