A lot of Indians complain about internal migration. Every chat puja (ahem) brings out the regular moaning about people moving from Bihar to Delhi, UP to Mumbai, Bengal to Bangalore.

But you know what the opposite looks like? China’s hukou system.

It’s worth understanding, because it shows exactly why we should never wish for it.

The hukou is a household registration system. It ties a person’s right to live, work, study, and access healthcare to their birthplace. If you’re born in a small town, that’s your “official home”. Even if you move to Beijing or Shanghai, the state still considers you a rural resident.

Sounds harmless? It’s not.

Without an urban hukou, millions of Chinese migrant workers can’t access city schools for their kids, public housing, healthcare, or many jobs. They build the cities, but they’re never allowed to belong there or benefit from their labour.

Imagine being born in Bihar and moving to Mumbai for work, but your kids can’t go to school there, you can’t get a hospital bed, and you have to travel home to vote or access welfare.
That’s what hukou does. It freezes opportunity by birthplace.

China introduced it in the 1950s to control rural-to-urban migration. It worked (maybe too well). Even today, about 300 million people live in cities where they have no legal rights to basic public services. That’s nearly the entire population of the U.S.

So when you see Indians moving across states, yes, it strains infrastructure. Yes, it creates cultural friction. But it’s also freedom in motion. People can chase opportunity, learn languages, marry across regions, and build better lives without needing state permission.

India’s internal migration story is proof of mobility. The alternative sounds elegant in theory, but is absolute economic control: cities that stay rich, villages that stay poor, and people who can never cross that line.

So the next time you complain that “outsiders are taking jobs” or “our city is too crowded”, please remember that the ability to move freely across your own country is a privilege billions don’t have. Can we do better? Of course we can. Are migrants in India constantly mistreated? Yes of course and we need stronger support systems.

But it IS a privilege we call a right.
Protect it. Don’t wish it away. 🇮🇳
