As Imran Khan’s entire family (including kids) are abducted in Pakistan, a reminder that both @commonwealthsec and @EU_Commission have enabled the military regime at every turn. The @SGCommonwealth suppressed a damning report on the 2024 elections which only became public because of @DropSiteNews. Meanwhile @EUPakistan simply handed over its elections report to the regime that benefited from rigging the election!

The Commonwealth and EU have been silent as the elected prime minister of Pakistan languishes in a death cell, the military rips up the constitution, destroys any notion of judicial independence, outlaws freedom of expression through PECA, and is now collectively punishing Khan’s entire family because of a call to protest.

These “democracy and human rights defending institutions” are not dying because of Trump. They are dying because of their own hypocrisy!

Authorities have already detained Khan’s sisters under public-order laws, arrested PTI figures and deployed extra security as the government vows to stop the march.

The awkward part for Washington is who sits atop Pakistan’s security system: Field Marshal Asim Munir, whom Trump has repeatedly praised as his “favorite field marshal,” while U.S.-Pakistan military cooperation has been warming again, including a proposed $686 million F-16 upgrade package.

Responding to the arbitrary detention of members of former prime minister Imran Khan’s family, including his three sisters, as well as activists from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) ahead of the party’s planned protests and march on 27 September:

“The targeting of Imran Khan’s family and PTI party activists is a flagrant violation of their rights to liberty, freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly. Such actions speak to the severity of the current restrictions in Pakistan.

“The pre-emptive arrests of PTI members come ahead of planned country-wide protests by the party on 27 September, which government officials have openly vowed to stop. Roadblocks are already being erected in Islamabad. These developments do not bode well, especially given the authorities’ long track record of reckless and unlawful use of force against protesters. A protest cannot be deemed violent before it has even started. Pakistan’s authorities must uphold their obligations under international human rights law to facilitate peaceful assembly and refrain from unlawful measures to thwart these protests."

A source on the ground in Islamabad reports that some schools are informing parents that classes may move online for an unspecified period amid preparations for the coming protests.

The source also raises a serious humanitarian concern: what happens to patients who need regular hospital visits, blood tests, dialysis, procedures or emergency treatment if major roads are sealed?

Independent reporting confirms that 24 educational institutions have already been taken over to accommodate additional police and para-military personnel.

Islamabad is bracing for major disruption. Security measures must not cut ordinary citizens off from hospitals, education and essential services.
