Luego aparece El Rodeo I, donde permanecí secuestrado.
Nunca me llamó.
To those who say "it's her choice" I used to say the same thing about my own Hijab.
I was covered head to toe. Even on the beach. Even with my male relatives. And when people challenged me, I said: this is my choice. You know why? Because the other option was burning in hell, hung by my hair for eternity. That's what they taught me since childhood.
Yes, let me repeat it for you to just understand about our version of “freedom of choice.” I grew up in an Islamist culture that gave me two options. Cover yourself and go to heaven. Or don't cover, and be hanged by your hair and burned in hell.
Like when someone puts a gun to your head and says "you can go left or right", technically, yes, that's a choice.
I picked heaven. I called it freedom. And I believed it, because that's what happens when fear is all you've ever known.
And if you think I shouldn't be telling you my story, I don't care. I really, genuinely, from the bottom of my heart, don't care. The women still living under that "choice"? I care about them.

This piece for @AJEnglish with @pannellalfie was an extremely tough and sad one to do. We spoke to families who were still searching for their loved ones in La Guaira - looking through collapsed buildings, rubble or not knowing where to look at all. Some said they had accepted those they were looking for had died in the earthquakes, others were still full of hope that their family members were alive.
One family had come from Portuguesa to look for their daughter and sister. "I still have a family of four, not three," one of them said. Another guy, a policeman, had pulled some of the bodies of his family out of a building - and although on crutches was still looking for the rest, including his pregnant sister.
One of the most moving was speaking to a man who worked in a funeral parlour. He spoke about what they did there, what they had seen, and the many distraught families he spoke to each day. I asked how he was, and he said fine, like many others automatically reply. But then after a few minutes he revealed his two grandchildren - "two wonderful healthy boys" - had been killed. He started to cry. And I did too.

Almost two weeks after the devastating earthquakes in Venezuela, many people feel in limbo and are wondering, what comes next. Some of those from Caracas and La Guaira shared their concerns with me for @MiamiHerald
'Pirela works in a clinic and said she will probably go back to work in a few days. “It’s going to be a bit traumatic, you know? Because you go back feeling very nervous. Any phone alarm or anything like that triggers trauma. But I think little by little we are going to overcome those traumas,” she said.
For others, returning to work means returning to places marked by loss. “I am unbelievably sad. I am a pre-school teacher, and many of my students died. There are just three weeks before the end of the school year and we had been preparing for graduations. What do we do now?” Elizabeth Álvarez told The Miami Herald. Three of her colleagues also died.'

Machinery, machinery, machinery. That’s what I heard off every family today still searching for their loved ones in the rubble in La Guaira. Most said they had enough food and water but little or no help to remove the debris. Many diggers had no fuel. One family (first photo) had come from the state of Portuguesa to search for their daughter Alexandra, 23, years old. They’re sleeping in a tent. They brought with them friends and family from home to help look for her. They still hold out hope she’s alive. Another guy was on crutches searching for members of his family, including his pregnant sister.
