At my old job, my shift ended at 5:30 PM. The coworker taking over was supposed to be there by 5:15 so we could do a proper handoff.

She’d get to the building, grab coffee, chat with people in the hallways, and every single day I had to go hunt her down.

For weeks, I did it just to keep things running smoothly. Then one day it hit me:

I wasn’t her supervisor. I wasn’t getting paid to teach a grown adult how to show up on time. So I stopped.

From that day on, 5:30 sharp, I grabbed my stuff and walked out. No searching for her.

No chasing her down. No babysitting. It didn’t take long before she complained to our boss that I was leaving without giving her updates.
