🇮🇳 India’s banks just received a huge liquidity boost - but there’s a catch.

Banks attracted around $127 billion through FCNR(B) deposits.

Sounds great:
• More liquidity
• More funding
• Potential support for credit & growth

But this isn’t free money.

It’s a future foreign-currency liability.

Banks will have to repay these dollars + interest when deposits mature.

The RBI’s swap facility reduces much of the principal FX risk, but hedging costs and currency movements still matter.

So the real story isn’t just:

“More money = lower rates = stronger economy.”

It’s:

“More liquidity today… but what does the balance sheet look like when the deferred liability comes due?”

That’s where the real risk lies.
