This means that in most cases, widows are left with far less than what they are entitled to, pushing many into poverty and leaving them without a stable foundation to rebuild their lives.

A study on Nigeria and other Sub-Saharan African countries revealed that widows in Nigeria and their children receive only about 27.8% of inheritance after the death of a husband. The late husband’s family, on the other hand, takes the majority share, which amounts to 57.1%

In many parts of Nigeria, widows are often denied their legal right to inherit property from their late husbands. Instead, cultural practices and traditional norms sometimes strip them of land, homes, and assets leaving them vulnerable

even required to marry a relative of their late husband in order to keep access to property

This injustice highlights why it is critical to advocate for widows’ rights, provide legal and social support, and ensure that no woman is left behind simply because she lost her husband.
