🎤VOICEACTING 101: POST PROCESSING BASICS/TERMINOLOGY🌟
🧵THREAD🧵
Voice Over can be confusing when you're just getting into it, especially with all the terminology. So I'm here to clear some of that up for you, LET'S DIVE IN! 💪💡
NOTE: THIS IS NOT A ONE SIZE FITS ALL GUIDE. Everyone's voice sounds better with different settings EXPERIMENT, PRACTICE, AND HAVE FUN!
1️⃣ EQ (Equalization): EQ allows you to shape the frequency balance of your voice. Adjusting the different bands (low, mid, high) helps enhance clarity, reduce muddiness, and bring out desired characteristics. There are many EQ's depending on your DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) Experiment with each and play with the bands if your DAW allows you to. 🎛️🎶

Pro's: Improves vocal presence, clarity, and removes unwanted frequencies.
Con's: Over-EQing can sound unnatural, so use it judiciously to avoid a robotic or hollow sound.
2️⃣ Compression: Compression helps even out the dynamic range of your voiceover. It reduces loud peaks and brings up softer parts, resulting in a more consistent and polished sound. 🎚️🔊

AUDITION GUIDE (MULTIBAND): https://t.co/XQLp7bi5hO
Pro's: Smooths out vocal inconsistencies and enhances overall loudness.
Con's: Over-compression can make your voice sound unnatural or squeezed, so use it moderately to retain dynamics and naturalness. Using a voice level compression setting can also fluctuate audio levels so be mindful!
3️⃣ De-Essing: De-essing targets sibilant sounds (such as "s" and "sh") that can be harsh or piercing. Use de-esser plugins or techniques to tame these frequencies, maintaining a smooth and pleasant delivery. 🎙️🐍
AUDACITY DOES NOT HAVE A BUILT IN DE-ESSER, MUST FIND A RELIABLE PLUGIN!
AUDITION DE-ESSER GUIDE: https://t.co/2xs89DBK4m
Pro's: Reduces sibilance and creates a more pleasant listening experience.
Con's: Over-de-essing can make your voice sound lispy or dull, or even cut audio, so find the balance to maintain naturalness and clarity.
4️⃣ Noise Reduction: Noise reduction techniques remove background noise or hum from your recordings. Use noise gates, spectral noise reduction, or denoisers to minimize distractions and create a clean audio canvas. 🔇✂️

AUDITION DE-NOISE GUIDE: https://t.co/WeVYfUI95O
Pro's: Eliminates unwanted background noise, resulting in a cleaner sound.
Con's: Over-processing can introduce artifacts or affect vocal quality, so be cautious not to strip away natural ambiance or compromise vocal integrity.
5️⃣ Reverb & Delay: Reverb adds spaciousness, simulating room acoustics. Use it to create a sense of environment, but be mindful not to overdo it. Delay adds echoes, creating depth.
(HOWEVER, AIM FOR NO REVERB UNLESS YOU FEEL IT ADDS TO A RECORDING. YOU DO NOT ALWAYS WANT TO SOUND LIKE YOU ARE 'IN A BOX' OR 'IN THE BATHROOM')🏰🔁

AUDITION REVERB GUIDE:

Pro's: Adds depth and presence to your voice, creating a professional sound.
Con's: Excessive reverb or delay can make your voice sound distant or unnatural, so apply it tastefully to avoid overshadowing the vocal clarity.
6️⃣ Advanced Tip: NOT TYPICAL, BUT FUN TO KNOW AND EXPERIMENT WITH. Parallel Processing! Create multiple versions of your audio track with different settings (e.g., EQ, compression). Blend them together to achieve a more controlled and polished result. 🔄💎
Pro's: Allows for precise control and customization of your sound. Con's: Requires experimentation and fine-tuning to avoid over-processing or conflicting effects, so practice and trust your ears.

Big Pride Month shoutout to the late Maddie Blaustein, the wonderful trans woman who was the iconic first English voice of Meowth and my introduction to transgender people. 🏳️⚧️ She is missed to this very day and will always be the best English Meowth to me! :D
Are you a VTuber? Two small things you can do on your channel to add some interaction to your stream!
1. VTubeStudio - Settings (cogwheel) scroll down all the way - link your Twitch account. You can use the built in "emote dropper" function to let chats emotes fall around your model, physics based! It's super simple to setup, built into VTubeStudio by default and a great way for chatters to be able to see their emotes they use on screen. It has compatibility with all custom emotes on Twitch, along with extensions like 7TV, BTTV etc! You can also choose how many emotes per message, size, "bounce" options and much more!
2. Using SoundAlerts! I'm bringing these back to my channel in waves, but they're really a great way for people who want to spend bits anyway to get some more interaction out of the streamer. Things like slightly teasing the streamer when something funny happens - jumpscares, meme sounds and tons more can be found on SoundAlerts and easily hooked up to your stream via browser source! Give people an added bonus when they support you with bits!
These are both things that I'm bringing back to my own stream, as they've been turned off since my debut while I work out some kinks and decide how much I really want to enable. Always mix things up!
