Beware rumours of compromise regarding the restriction of jury trials if Starmer is politically wounded or politically finished tomorrow.
It isn’t enough to compromise on judge-alone trials. It’s not nearly enough.
It was never the real issue 👇🏼
This is simply incorrect. Int’l students are ineligible to access student loans and public funds. Furthermore, tuition fees are significantly higher for international students than home students. In many cases they are double. Universities rely heavily on int’l students’ fees.
‘Practice at the Criminal Bar is a constant lesson in the subtle differences between empathy and sympathy and, on occasion, the calamitous consequences of confusing the two.’
Wise words from Hardy as pupil barristers begin their journey.
This is the week pupil barristers get to their feet for the first time. And every barrister, however senior, can remember their first time. I wrote this about the experience: https://t.co/qtIbeG03fI
My favourite moment from yesterday.
@NECircuitleader giving the Minister a reality check on Labour’s nonsensical plans to limit jury trials to address the backlog.
Hello, there 👋
Have you heard David Lammy MP and Sarah Sackman MP talking about people stealing bottles of whisky and swiping mobile telephones as examples of people who should not get jury trials?
Well. I’d like to tell you a story.

You can joke about Pam Bondi’s ridiculous unprofessionalism all you want, but I’m deeply shocked by it: She acts as if she fears absolutely no consequences, convinced that there will be no more political power transfers. — This should shake everyone to their core.
Trayvon Martin should be turning 31 today. He should be surrounded by friends and loved ones celebrating him.
He and his family were robbed of that because a grown man stalked him and killed him.
Without accountability.
The unpopular, uncomfortable truth about jury trials is that those who need them are not ‘others’.
People I’ve represented: police officers, university students, taxi drivers, teachers, chemists, business people, *children* & those who simply went for a drive in their car.
If the Government wants to reduce the Crown Court backlog it should simply remove cases from the backlog. Apply a public interest test to prosecutions that reflects the fact that it will take 5 years to try someone for selling some Weed.
The thing I keep thinking about Alex Pretti is that he became a licensed RN in 2021. That means he saw what was happening during the COVID pandemic and did it anyway. He saw the burning building and ran into the fire. A hero multiple times over and they shot him in the street.
