Regardless of what Marco Rubio says, Trump explicitly claimed in his Thursday night speech that China nefariously acquired voter data in the 2020 election. If true, such allegations would warrant a response. But, they aren’t, which is why in the aftermath of Thursday’s disastrous speech, Trump and his officials have downplayed their comments and returned to what works: blaming the “enemies from within”, an imaginary internal communist threat.

Trump’s sudden pivot away from his own election interference accusations is noteworthy. It shows that he’s made a claim that even he can’t defend. The press, the American people, and our elected representatives need to continue pressing him on it and hold him accountable to his own words.
