A short while ago, as I was on my way to get some food for my family, the Israeli occupation army suddenly targeted a group of civilians without any prior warning, killing four people instantly and critically injuring others.

I was only a few metres away from this horrific massacre. I saw the victims’ body parts and blood scattered everywhere around me, in a horrifying scene whose sheer brutality words cannot describe.

I was just a few steps away from death. I had gone out to get some food for my family, only to find myself facing a brutal massacre, witnessing death with my own eyes. I do not know how I survived, and I still cannot comprehend what happened before my eyes just moments ago.

In Gaza, even going out to get food can turn, in an instant, into a journey towards death, without warning and without mercy.

In May 1948, Egypt caught two Israeli soldiers near the wells of Gaza and accused Israel of trying to poison its water. At the UN, Israel's representative called the charge medieval anti-Semitic incitement. Israel called it a "wicked libel."

In 2022, the Israeli historians Benny Morris and Benjamin Z. Kedar published the IDF's own documents. The operation was real. It had a code name: Cast Thy Bread.

I served in Israel's Foreign Ministry and was an analyst in Unit 8200. I never heard of this operation until Haaretz published the files.
