A woman at a bagel counter gave me a small paper card and punched one hole in it.

I asked what I had won.

"Nothing yet, hon. Ten of those and you get a free one."

Ten. A free bagel, promised in advance, on the condition that I come back nine more times. In my country you cannot buy a man's return for the price of a bagel. Here it is priced, and the price is nine bagels.

"It's just a card," she said.

It is not just a card.

I carry eleven of them now. Bagel. Sub. Car wash. Smoothie. A wing place. A frozen yogurt shop where I do not care for the yogurt, but my card is at eight, and a man who walks away at eight is a man who lifts a siege in the ninth month.

I keep them in a flat tin, in order of progress. I build my week around whichever one is closest.

In April I drove twenty five minutes past a perfectly good bagel to reach my bagel.

There is a card in that tin from a shop that closed. I kept it. The shop shut. The debt did not.

Then I put the car wash card through the car wash. It was in my shirt pocket. It came back to me as grey pulp, and I stood in the vacuum bay holding nine visits in my hand.

A young man named Trevor watched me do this.

"Oh, I'll just punch you a new one."

He put nine holes in a fresh card without looking up, the way you would top off somebody's coffee. Nine months of discipline restored in four seconds by a teenager with a hole punch.

I did not know whether to thank him or to grieve.

Loyalty here is not a weight you carry. It is a thing they hand back to you when you drop it.

I told myself I would let the yogurt card go. Eight is not ten. Eight is a field you are allowed to leave.

I went on Tuesday.

I am nine holes away from a bagel that costs two dollars and seventy five cents.

I will not buy it. I will earn it.
