For this week’s #HumansOfCIRES, meet Laura Thapa (@wildfirebender), CIRES/NOAA #GlobalSystemsLaboratory summer intern! Laura worked on a #wildfire forecasting & modeling project, she writes songs on the ukulele/guitar & she loves narwhals! Full interview➡️https://t.co/pe3mSYr5x0
Congrats to Laura on her new publication! 🎉Click the link to read the article: https://t.co/wigerOruQk. If you don’t want to read so many words, here is her blog post: https://t.co/GdnQvSN7we✨
Behind the paper
Burn Baby Burn: Properly estimating fire intensity improves estimation of wildfire smoke transport

False injections in wildfire plume rise simulations are partly due to the assumed radiant fraction of heat flux being 0.5-25 times higher than observations

Two late-season, wildfire-generated thunderstorms (#pyroCb, orange shading) developed over the #KNPComplex today. At least 83 pyroCbs have occurred in North America since May. The most intense pyroCbs injected smoke into the stratosphere, similar to a volcanic eruption. #CAwx
Your semi-regular reminder that just because California and the broader West see large wildfires on a more regular basis than eastern portions of the U.S., they can certainly still occur in moister landscapes when it gets dry enough. #GreenwoodFire is a forest fire in Minnesota.
Outbreak of at least four thunderstorms generated by wildfire (#pyroCb) in Northern #California over the #DixieFire, #AntelopeFire, and #McFarlandFire. Note the smoky anvil clouds at about 30,000 ft. Dixie Fire produced pyroCbs from two separate regions of the fire front. #CAwx
What happens when a wildfire feeds into a massive thunderstorm? At #AGU20, @wildfirebender shares her exciting @NASAAirborne observations from within and around the the 2019 #FIREXAQ#pyroCb. Some evidence for rapid cloud processing of the smoke aerosols! https://t.co/P0hdBu7cL5
Wildfires to the north have created thick layers of smoke at upper levels which are now mixing to the surface. Along with that, the Bobcat fire is creating a lot of smoke for L.A. Take precautions to limit your exposure to smoke! #cawx#casmoke#SoCalFires2020
California fires in 2019:
- 4,927 fires
- 118k acres burned.
California fires in 2020 (so far):
- 7,606 fires
- 2.3 million acres burned.
CLIMATE. CHANGE. IS. REAL.
Wildfire smoke can affect your health. Pay attention to these symptoms & stay indoors if possible! Check https://t.co/LRRlZ9Qx8c for the latest air quality information. #CAwx#CAFires
