Food research for the day: Artisan cheese isn't mass-made cheese. Small makers heat it slowly or not at all, and raw milk cheese must age 60+ days. Natural bacteria boost flavor. Big plants flash-pasteurize milk in 15 seconds. Support local cheesemakers. https://t.co/ntDE2JfXkv
The garden peppers I dug up and brought inside are putting out new leaves, and my tomato cuttings are rooting in the grow tent. Fresh peppers in the middle of an Iowa winter would be a nice win. You are what you eat, so I'm growing some of it myself πΆοΈ
@TipOfTheBanana Reading labels has been such a wake-up call. It's surprising what ends up in even the basics. The more I learn, the more I lean on whole foods I can recognize and make myself.
@atomicmass_ltd I got the system set up and seeds started this weekend. Whichever plants are ready for transplant first is what will go in. I got a bush acorn squash from High Mowing that I hope does well.
Last night I got a big 4'x6' flood tray for a new hydroponic system π± I've built quite a few, but this will be my biggest yet. I'm still researching the best setup for my space, so my whole weekend is hydro research and building. So excited! π§π§ Pictures coming soon πΈ
Ok, guys, Friday I seeded a tray for the hydro tower my husband set up. 3 micro dwarf tomatoes (Little Red Riding Hood, Hahms Gelbe Topftomate, Pinocchio Orange) and a surprise Jigsaw pepper. The tomato seed is about 5 years old so germination might be low. Wish me luck! π±
@atomicmass_ltd My plan is for a vegetable garden. Space saving varieties of cucumbers and squash, celery, green beans, cabbage. We'll see what fits. I've only grown celery on its own before, so I'm curious how they'll all do sharing the same nutrient mix.
Food research for the day: The FDA is offering guidance to baby food makers. Cadmium comes from the soil crops grow in, and babies are more at risk because of their small size. Carrots and infant cereal test highest. Good food starts with the dirt. https://t.co/OF37HI0RZ5
This study on olive oil shows that polyphenols in olive oil matter a lot for our health. The oil highest in polyphenols raised good HDL cholesterol the most and did the best job protecting LDL from damage. https://t.co/cp6PyjAge5
Food research for the day: Want more polyphenols in your olive oil? Labels rarely list them, so pick extra virgin, check for a recent harvest date and choose dark glass or a tin. Some bottles list polyphenols in mg/kg. A bitter, peppery bite is a good sign too.
Food research for the day: Virginia Tech gave folks two meals matched on calories, carbs, fat, protein, salt, one ultra-processed and one not, and their bodies and brains still reacted different. So this seems to confirm the label isn't the whole story. https://t.co/W4Q7tWoD2Q
I make coffee in a percolator every morning, and it definitely tastes better than coffee maker coffee. I think it's because I can easily take the percolator apart and clean every piece. Simple tools you can actually keep clean just work better. Anyone else still percolate?
Economically Motivated Adulteration in Honey? π€ I had no idea what that meant until I read the FDA report. Sometimes I use honey in my homemade bread, and I love cornbread covered in butter and honey, so this seems like info I need. π§΅
Undeclared means it's in the product but not on the label. Violative means the sample broke the rules. When a sample failed, the FDA refused it entry into the U.S. and put the company and product on Import Alert, which flags them so shipments can be stopped at the border.
