Our North is an extraordinary place, but climate change has put it at risk.
Today, I announced we’re acting to protect it for future generations:
We’re investing in marine conservation in the Arctic, with Inuit who call the North home leading the way.
@LabradorIce @paulcmmccarney @AcademicInuk @tagaq @aoife_macnamara @DarrylLeroux im not basing my questions off academics, I cant comment on that. If the report is wrong that don't help anyone. I'm not trying to be NG vs NCC but im raising questions and concerns that have a right to be asked and answered. How are there 6000 Inuit in southern Labrador?
@LabradorIce @paulcmmccarney @AcademicInuk @tagaq @aoife_macnamara @DarrylLeroux I don't know how accurate Darryls report is, I never read it and not going to. It seems like this argument for inuit identity in the south is becoming a case of which academic report is more accurate than the other.
@paulcmmccarney @AcademicInuk @LabradorIce@tagaq @aoife_macnamara @DarrylLeroux As a settler academic like you say Paul what is your academic or however you say it? And why are you tuning in so concerned about Darryl lerouxs report? How does it affect your people or concerns?
@AcademicInuk @tagaq @aoife_macnamara OK, you are one family. What about the 6000 others in NCC? I know you can't answer that but it's a legitimate question that needs attention. That's why you see inuit questioning NCC and all they seem to get back is vague answers or flak that they shouldn't be questioned
@AcademicInuk @tagaq @aoife_macnamara But the issue that is rightfully questioned is that an entire collective of people accepted that term metis (no matter who coined it or if it was wrong or not) for themselves for how many years? 20-30? An entire generation of people grew up believing that they are solely metis?
@LabradorIce @AcademicInuk @tagaq @aoife_macnamara Yup if this was all handled from the start in a more respectful way it would be much easier to navigate. The hurt and lashouts come from the intergenerational trauma inuit live with on daily basis from memories of being abused by settlers/institutions. This has to be understood
@AcademicInuk @tagaq @aoife_macnamara You are not your government body, remember that. Just like my inuk family is not Nunatsiavut Government. He's talking about the NCC as a collective of 6000 Inuit. There's truth in what he's saying an there's truth in what you're saying
@AcademicInuk @tagaq @aoife_macnamara can't just feel bad that they're understaffed so we should accept their actions you know? It is what it is, they seem to be good at communicating to feds but they're not doing a good job with communicating to inuit when their legitimacy is questioned
@AcademicInuk @tagaq @aoife_macnamara I think for Natan to make that statement, if I'm not mistaken, is that every inuk body (like Nunavut nunavik etc) involved in ITK had to vote and they all voted against accepting NCC as an inuit body so it's not just Natan or NG its every other inuit region
@AcademicInuk @tagaq @aoife_macnamara Debbie im sorry but there is disconnection right there in your sentence, no Inuit would recognize Metis as meaning mixed inuk. It's not just who coined the term it's about an entire organization that accepted and believed in the term until being told otherwise by metis org
@AcademicInuk @tagaq @aoife_macnamara If someone's saying you don't exist that's not right. NCC as a political body is not doing a good job of representing any inuit that remain in that area. It looks like they are 'using' inuit in any way to be recognized and don't care when there are concerns raised by other inuit
@AcademicInuk @tagaq @aoife_macnamara My other question is about this NG border argument. What about NCC southern border? Will you accept Nunamit as an inuit organization if they use this argument against NCC? Then what about their border? There are ppl at the tip of NF that make inuit style kamek, what about them?
