Based on your assumption I gather you are unaware that the Ambassador was the Commanding Officer of the 1 Engineer Regiment of the JDF and is a trained Engineer.
Recent disparaging remarks from first term Opposition MP Nekeisha Burchell, about Speaker of the House Mrs. Holness, should concern every Jamaican, not just women.
Likening the Speaker’s efforts to maintain order in Parliament to “control of a husband in marriage” are unrefined, inappropriate, disrespectful and downright low.
The country looks to Parliament for direction, leadership and examples.
As MPs, we are guided by the Standing Orders of Parliament. Until those Standing Orders are changed, let decorum reign!
I wondered if I read these reports correctly...because I could not believe that in 2026, this is the type of comment being made by a female member of Parliament! What a retrogressive statement and state of mind! You know, when measured against other countries across the world, Jamaica is one of the better performing countries in terms of women in leadership. But we are not without challenges, and gains can be lost if we are not careful. It is one thing when the efforts at disempowerment come from predictable male spaces - an entirely different thing when they come from women who should be fighting the same battles. @JulietHolness has been an exemplary role model and an inspiration to countless girls who aspire to be strong leaders - long may she continue to do so despite the best efforts of some - including those who have yet to achieve a fraction of what the Speaker has professionally, politically and otherwise! Just incredible. Clearly an apology is unlikely from this quarter, but I hope that even one person in the PNP Women's movement will at least sit down with Ms Burchell and give her some counsel.
If this is her script, then the speech was in English but that section was crafted specifically to defy the standing orders rather than using a motion to make her point and move on without the distraction.
This should’ve been her approach from the outset. It begs the question, if she always intended to do this, what was the point of her stunt on Wednesday? This habit of disruptive theatrics in the house needs to stop.
Standing Order 6 mandates that the proceedings of the House must be in the English language. If the opposition member truly wanted to bat for the culture, she could’ve moved a motion to amend the standing orders. This is mere theatrics & rightly shut down by the speaker.

I have written to Dr. Terrence Drew, Chairman of CARICOM, formally objecting to the actions of Delcy Rodríguez, who publicly displayed a map during official engagements within CARICOM member states falsely portraying Guyana’s Essequibo region as part of Venezuela.
