These chatterboxes are nestling barn swallows, found on Staten Island after their nest fell or was removed. We receive very few swallows, and we’re pleased to report that these have been growing and doing well after a week.

It’s World Migratory Bird Day 2024! This year’s theme is “Protect Insects, Protect Birds.”
Here’s a young Piping Plover chick seen last summer at Ft Tilden with a moth. Migratory birds AND insects are greatly imperiled, & the far biggest threats to both are us.
Join us in #WorldMigratoryBirdDay 2024 events worldwide, where individuals are encouraged to take action to preserve insects and birds. Simple steps, from cultivating native gardens to advocating for insect conservation laws, can make a significant difference.
03:39 5/5 The CahowCam1 female has so far spent the visit at the entrance into the nest chamber, in the tunnel. Here she finally enters the chamber briefly before heading back into the tunnel.

Does conservation work? Our paper by @rewild shows that it does: a global analysis of 665 trials (incl. several by @RSPBScience) found that conservation improved the state of biodiversity or slowed declines in two-thirds of cases @BirdLife_Sci https://t.co/DskyzkYffQ
Volume up! Lucky to record a group of 4 Little Curlew (Numenius minutus 小杓鹬 Xiǎo biāo yù) as they migrated overhead at the ChaoBai River this morning. A lovely 'curlew-ey' rising call.
🇲🇹 Jumejn wara l-ftuħ tal-istaġun tal-kaċċa tar-rebbiegħa 2024, li sa issa suppost hu miftuħ biss għas-Summien, BirdLife Malta ġabret l-ewwel vittma tal-kaċċa illegali għal dan l-istaġun - #BagħdanAħmar li nstab il-Ġimgħa minn membru tal-pubbliku fil-Qajjenza.
Il-Bagħdan Aħmar adult (mara), li jidher fir-ritratt fuq il-lemin, kien eżaminat mill-veterinarju tal-Gvern u kien iċċertifikat li qala' tiri ta' senter, biex sar l-ewwel vittma tal-kaċċa illegali li nafu biha miġbura minn BirdLife Malta mill-ftuħ tal-istaġun fl-10 ta' April lil hawn. It-tajra tal-priża kellha diversi balal taċ-ċomb f'ġisimha u ksur fil-ġewnaħ tax-xellug.
Għasafar li jitniżżlu bħalissa, bħalma ġara lil dan il-Bagħdan Aħmar, ikunu qed ipassu mill-Afrika lejn l-Ewropa biex ibejtu, bil-vjaġġ tagħhom jintemm ħesrem minħabba l-kaċċa illegali.
Ir-ritratt fuq in-naħa tax-xellug ukoll juri Bagħdan Aħmar, u ttieħed ftit tal-jiem ilu fl-ajruport. Qed nurukom dan it-tieni ritratt sabiex wieħed ikun jista' jammira s-sbuħija ta' dan l-għasfur fil-milja tiegħu. Dan huwa l-mod kif għasfur bħal dan għandu jiġi gawdut minn kulħadd waqt il-passa tar-rebbiegħa, u mhux kif jidher fir-ritratt l-ieħor! Liema wieħed minnhom tippreferi?

🇬🇧 Two days into the start of the 2024 spring hunting season, which until now is supposedly open only for Common Quail, BirdLife Malta has recovered the first illegal hunting casualty of the season - a #WesternMarshHarrier that was found on Friday by a member of the public in Qajjenza.
The adult female Marsh-harrier, seen in the picture on the right, was examined by the MaltaGov veterinarian and certified as being shot, becoming the first known illegal hunting casualty to be received by BirdLife Malta since the start of the season on the 10th of April. The bird of prey had several pellets in its body and a fracture to the left wing.
Birds being shot during this time, such as this protected Marsh-harrier, would have been on their migration from Africa to Europe to breed, with their journey cut short due to illegal hunting.
The picture on the left-hand side also shows a Marsh-harrier, and was taken a few days ago at the airport. We're sharing this other photo so that one can admire the beauty of this bird in all its splendour, which is how it should be enjoyed by all during the spring migration, and not as seen in the other picture! Which one of them do you prefer?

20:17 3/17 The CahowCam1 male is preening the chick before feeding it.
When a parent returns, a Cahow chick can get frantic when begging for food. Allopreening helps to calm the chick down, which in turn enables a successful feeding.
06:55 3/9 The CahowCam1 female is staying inside with the chick for the day.
While she rests, the chick, who has been fed by both parents last night, explores the chamber and does some nestorations:
