This myth about rare earths has made its rounds, but it isn’t accurate. EPA and mining regulation have curtailed American mining of rare earths minerals, but of what we do gather, we send to China to refine. Many countries do this. We have access to many of the same minerals, but somehow believe we are helping the earth by allowing someone else to mine and refine them…who has no EPA and makes promises to appease about the environment but never does anything.

The last report I read had China’s holdings of US Treasury notes at 800+ billion, down from 1.1 trillion a couple years ago. You have to know 1) They can dump the 30 year note, but America doesn’t have to buy it back. 2) American only owes the interest on such notes until maturity, nothing more. 3) Mass sells offs of any security drive the price down due to basic economics of supply and demand.

Bottom line: Let China wither on the vine. There is little they can do and every action they take only hurts themselves. With the additional issue of the inability to feed themselves (require 25% of daily food consumption to be imported), low production rate (takes 4 Chinese to equal 1 American in work output) and a population averaging nearly 60 years of age, their options are crap. If people start starving there, the riots begin. A whole new massive problem when the army starts shooting.
