Every time the #Bears QB conversation comes up, it’s phrased as if Ryan Poles picking between:

- Justin Fields, the “average sure thing”, plus picks

- Caleb/Drake, the “talented wild card”

And gosh, I WISH Justin Fields was an “average sure thing”! That’s the crux of the issue! Fields is just as much a projection as either of the two rookies, hence the debate!

This debate has frustrated me more than any in my time as a #Bears writer — at least Mitch gave fans a Pro Bowl, a franchise rookie yardage record, and a playoff appearance!

Now every Pro-Fields argument relies “ifs”, “buts”, complaining about coaches (that got jobs elsewhere), and excuses for everything from not seeing open WRs to poor 4th quarter performance to constant rushing within a passing league.

I understand that “nobody but Ryan Poles knows what will happen”, but that’s not an argument in favor of Justin Fields. I think he’s out of time, and I think Poles knows it. It’s why Brad Biggs said what he did today on the radio.

Truly, we don’t know what will happen over the next two months. But I’m personally tired of suggesting that the QB who ranks outside of the Top 20 in:

- ANY/A (26th)
- QBR (24th)
- EPA/Play (27th, min 150 plays)
- Success Rate (40th, min 150 plays)

Has been good enough to be worth building around.

His film doesn’t help either — it shows constant turndowns over the middle, discomfort in the pocket, major issues with timing, and an extreme reliance on his legs.

Fields makes life harder on his OL by rarely moving off the top of his drop spot, makes life harder on his WRs by throwing late, and rarely looks for anyone other than DJ Moore & Kmet.

As I said in a tweet yesterday, I hate being “the bad guy”. But if we’re going to have a conversation about QBs, let’s make sure we’re having a fair one — betting on Justin Fields is a bet on your projection of what he might become, not a bet on the QB he’s shown us he is.

It’s the same bet many want to make on a rookie QB, but the difference is that it’s reasonable to expect that a rookie QB will get better as his career progresses. Justin taking a large leap in production in Year 4 would be unprecedented, though it’s not technically impossible. But he’d need to show results much quicker than the rookie would to justify Poles’ faith.

I don’t think this “debate” is framed accurately, mostly because I don’t think a fair framing would make it much of a debate. I do think Caleb Williams with DJ Moore and Malik Nabers would be better than Justin Fields, Moore, Marvin Harrison Jr, and Dallas Turner, and I can point to teams like Atlanta and Las Vegas as reasons for why I think so.

Ultimately, it’s Poles’ decision. We’ll see what he decides. But the longer this “debate” rages on, the more I wish we’d stop bringing up names like Purdy, Lamar, Allen, and Hurts — all had shown more than Justin has at this point in their career. Justin isn’t comparable to them. If he was, we would’ve had a debate on our hands.

But see what happens. All we can do now is wait.
