This may be the perfect summary of the debate between "rights" and the "exercise of rights".

We Americans all like the idea of Thanksgiving, but we're all a little uncomfortable by our relatives' actions/words at the celebration. Unless we're also the host; then we also have to be the referee.

Stipulated: we all have the same rights, but there are limits on how we exercise those rights, both individually and together. Like much else to do with the Thanksgiving celebration, we spend too little time preparing our exercise.

Maybe the real problem is how frequently we celebrate Thanksgiving together. We're just out of practice.
